About Us

Top Banana began when Jean Guiffré visited her mother in her high-rise apartment building and discovered her mom barely had anything in her cupboards—not even enough to make a cup of coffee.

Even though there was a shuttle to the grocery store, congestive heart failure and arthritis made it difficult for Jean's mother to get around. And even though help from family was only a phone call away, she had always prided herself on her ability to manage independently.

That experience had a profound effect on Jean who realized there must surely be others in the same situation.

With the support of a few crucial individuals who are still involved in the organization today, Jean started Top Banana in 1982 and began her mission of making sure no one's family member would need to go without food or dignity simply because they couldn't get to the grocery store.

Top Banana today

Top Banana now delivers groceries to some 500 residents in the Maryland/D.C. metropolitan area with the support of 15 employees, a dedicated board of directors, and a small cadre of volunteers. It is able to continue its mission through the generous support of government agencies, community foundations, and individual donations.

Jean has been named a Washingtonian of the Year for her work, and Top Banana has been recognized twice as one of the area's Best Small Charities by the Catalogue for Philanthropy.
